Patty Czajka, reminiscing about her childhood in Detroit, shared how a Canadian TV series based in Prince Edward Island captivated her young mind. She fondly remembered watching “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother every Sunday, especially admiring actress Mag Ruffman in the role of Aunt Olivia. When Czajka learned of Ruffman’s appearance at a fan convention on P.E.I. dedicated to the show, she eagerly purchased a ticket to attend.
Fans of “Road to Avonlea” gathered from various parts of the world for the fully booked convention on the Island. The acclaimed Canadian series, broadcast in over 100 countries, debuted in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996. The storyline followed the adventures of young Sarah Stanley, portrayed by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her late mother’s relatives at the dawn of the 20th century, drawing inspiration from Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels.
The convention spanned three days and featured activities such as oyster and wine tastings, as well as panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew. Attendees also embarked on tours around the Island to visit filming locations from the series, along with Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the iconic Cavendish house that served as the backdrop for her renowned work “Anne of Green Gables.”
Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, the event organizer, highlighted the enduring appeal of the show, describing it as a means for people to seek solace and experience values like kindness, friendship, and camaraderie. He expressed optimism about the show continuing to attract new audiences, envisioning future conventions with sustained interest over the years.
Mag Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, expressed gratitude for the fans’ enthusiasm and emotional connection to the show. She shared how the cast and crew present were moved by the fans’ sentiments, emphasizing how the characters and stories from “Road to Avonlea” remain etched in their hearts even years after the show ended.
Czajka, now rewatching the series with her three children, emphasized the joy of sharing the show with her kids, noting the rarity of finding a program suitable for family viewing. She described the series as a timeless gem that captivated her in her youth and continues to resonate with her and her children, providing a precious hour of wholesome entertainment in today’s media landscape.
