A man faced a life-threatening situation when a robotic vacuum cleaner exploded in his residence, as disclosed by his mother who shared further distressing details of the event.
Lachie Perrem, aged 25, sustained severe burns covering 75% of his body after the unexpected ignition of his vacuum device led to flames engulfing his home on Airgate Close in Brabham, located in Perth’s northeast, on July 2. Following the incident, he was swiftly transported to Fiona Stanley Hospital where he underwent numerous surgical procedures.
Visual evidence post-explosion depicted shattered windows, charred walls, and extensive destruction throughout the kitchen and living room, with furniture obliterated, floorboards scorched, and debris strewn across the premises.
The mother, Fiona Perrem, divulged additional insights into the incident, stating: “He had a robo vac, and unbeknownst to him, the battery had leaked. A cooking activity triggered an explosion, where he was at the epicenter of the catastrophe.”
The malfunctioning device has been dispatched to the state’s building and energy office for a thorough inquiry.
According to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Western Australia, lithium-ion batteries commonly used in robotic vacuums pose significant risks. A spokesperson highlighted that when these batteries fail, they can undergo thermal runaway, leading to violent eruptions, release of hazardous gases, and the initiation of intense fires.
Mr. Perrem has already undergone three surgeries post-explosion, which included procedures like wound debridement and skin grafts on various body parts. He temporarily experienced loss of voice, with further surgeries anticipated in the upcoming months.
On July 20, Ms. Perrem provided an update on the GoFundMe page, expressing positivity in Lachie’s recovery progress. She noted the successful healing of grafts, commendable hand movement improvements, and the removal of his feeding tube as significant milestones achieved.
She continued, “His face and neck are also healing remarkably well. Each step forward is a major accomplishment, and we are deeply grateful for the exceptional care he is receiving, along with the continuous support, encouragement, and donations from everyone. We appreciate the ongoing solidarity as Lachie continues on his path to recovery.”
