A young adult sought dental care due to discomfort in his upper and lower right wisdom teeth but was shocked to discover a severe health issue rather than a routine tooth problem. Ethan Harrison, 19, from South Wingfield, first suspected a simple tooth infection that might require extraction. However, his dentist identified a swollen lymph node and advised him to consult his general practitioner.
Subsequent tests led to an urgent hospitalization at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, where Ethan received a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia, a rare type of cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow. Medical professionals emphasized the crucial timing of his hospital visit. If he had delayed seeking medical attention by even a few days after his dental check-up, he might have had only a limited three-week window left to live.
Ethan’s mother, Roxy Bond, expressed disbelief at the situation, remarking that it seemed like a scenario one hears about happening to others, not one’s own child. She disclosed that Ethan had been enduring tooth pain for about a month before deciding to see the dentist.
Roxy elaborated on Ethan’s symptoms, including breathing difficulties, fever, and a large swollen lymph node on his neck that appeared while he was on holiday in Cyprus. She mentioned that the medical staff at the hospital quickly suspected leukemia due to the symptoms.
The family shared that Ethan has commenced chemotherapy treatment, highlighting the lengthy recovery process ahead. Despite the challenges, Roxy remained optimistic, stating that the cancer is highly treatable. Ethan, employed as a forklift driver, is anticipated to undergo four rounds of chemotherapy, with the initial round already underway. His hospitalization for the first round is estimated to last a month, during which he will receive treatment twice daily with different medications.
Roxy expressed pride in Ethan’s resilience, noting his positive attitude despite the invasive medical procedures he is undergoing. She acknowledged the impact on their daily lives, with Ethan on sick leave and her postponing a new job to support him throughout his treatment.
While Ethan and Roxy stay at the hospital, Chris, Roxy’s husband, manages the household and cares for Ethan’s younger siblings. The sudden turn of events has affected the family deeply, but they have received immense support from friends and well-wishers.
To aid Ethan during his recovery period, his friends initiated a crowdfunding campaign, which has already raised close to £3,500 in just a week. Friend Livinia Wragg praised Ethan’s unwavering strength and described him as a kind, caring, and generous individual.
For those interested in supporting Ethan through his journey, a GoFundMe page has been set up for donations.
