A prominent contender for Royal Ascot encountered an unexpected injury while training for her upcoming race.
Lady Of Camelot, under the guidance of trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott from Australia, has amassed nearly £3 million in earnings as a successful sprinter, including a notable triumph at the 2024 Golden Slipper.
The decision to compete at Royal Ascot this year was made public several months ago, with entries in the King Charles III Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes where she held odds of 8-1 and 10-1, respectively. The plan was for her to participate in the Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane, Queensland as her final race before heading to the UK.
However, she had to withdraw from the race on Saturday and Royal Ascot after sustaining an injury during what was supposed to be a routine beach exercise.
Local stewards reported that Lady Of Camelot suffered wounds to her near foreleg from a stingray during a morning swim at the beach. The mare received treatment from the stable veterinarian, with further updates expected.
The owner, Go Bloodstock Australia, confirmed her withdrawal in a statement on Instagram, explaining that she was stung by a stingray in an unforeseen incident and had been transferred to a specialized veterinary hospital for observation. Due to the circumstances, her participation in the Brisbane Winter Carnival and international campaigns has been terminated.
A spokesperson for the team expressed disappointment over the situation, emphasizing the focus on Lady Of Camelot’s recovery and well-being given her exceptional talent and spirit. She was one of two Australian-trained sprinters with Royal Ascot entries who had to be ruled out recently.
Chris Waller, who celebrated success with Nature Strip, announced that Generosity would not be making the journey. Nonetheless, Waller is still expected to have representation with Joliestar while Bjorn Baker is set for his royal meeting debut with Overpass. Asfoora, trained by Henry Dwyer and winner of the King Charles two years ago, is also in contention.
