A Royal Navy captain has stepped down from commanding a British nuclear-armed submarine following an inquiry into his connection with a Labour MP. The investigation was initiated to determine if the married officer had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with Joani Reid. Subsequently, the Ministry of Defence conducted additional security checks after Joani Reid’s husband, David Taylor, was taken into custody on suspicion of assisting China’s foreign intelligence service.
The Ministry of Defence concluded that there was no security breach, and the naval officer faced no disciplinary measures. Although the officer has relinquished his submarine duties, he remains within the Royal Navy without any rule violations. Reports indicated that the officer and Ms. Reid exchanged “flirtatious” messages, a claim denied by a close associate of Ms. Reid.
The two individuals reportedly first encountered each other as young adults, with Ms. Reid visiting the Falsane base in January 2025 through an armed forces parliamentary program. Their interactions were limited to one meeting and message exchanges, with no physical involvement.
Regarding the incident, a Royal Navy spokesperson emphasized the priority of nuclear deterrent security and the existence of stringent security protocols. Mr. Taylor, accused of aiding China’s intelligence service, has been released on bail and refuted any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, Ms. Reid chose to suspend herself from the Labour whip until internal investigations are completed.
Despite multiple attempts, Ms. Reid did not provide a comment. In a recent statement, she defended her husband, stating that she had no reason to suspect his involvement in any illegal activities. She emphasized that neither she nor her children are part of the investigation and urged media outlets to respect their privacy.
Ms. Reid clarified that she has never been to China, discussed Chinese matters in the Commons, or raised any China-related questions.
