Frogmore Cottage is set to undergo a reversal of the £2.4 million renovations, marking a shift back to its pre-Meghan and Harry era. The property, once gifted by the late Queen to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as a wedding present in 2018, is nearing the completion of extensive work that will likely restore it to its original state as two separate semi-detached houses.
Following Harry and Meghan’s departure to California less than two years after moving into Frogmore Cottage, they were officially evicted by King Charles in 2023, leaving the residence unoccupied since then. Although the couple currently lacks a UK residence, Harry is reportedly keen on returning with Meghan and their children, Lilibet and Archie, pending the reinstatement of their security following a Home Office review.
A source mentioned, “It’s been empty for three years. Even Andrew thought it wasn’t good enough for him to move in. Maybe if they get rid of any trace of Harry and Meghan, then someone within the royal household will fancy it.”
It took nearly a year to customize the home for the Sussexes, which included the addition of a yoga studio, replacement of ceiling beams and floor joists, rewiring of electrics, and installation of new gas and water mains. Harry repaid the £2.4 million six months after vacating the property, situated in Home Park, Windsor, Berkshire. Reports suggest that plans are underway to revert the property back to two separate buildings post-renovation.
In reference to the property’s history, a source told The Sun, “It would draw the line under Frogmore Cottage’s controversial history and return it to the pre-Meghan and Harry era.” Notably, Frogmore Cottage was offered to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in exchange for surrendering his lease on the nearby thirty-room Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park in 2023.
Upon receiving the property, Harry and Meghan funded their own enhancements, including a luxurious £5,000 copper bathtub and interior design by Vicky Charles from Soho House, featuring vegan paint. Although they initially moved in before the birth of their son Archie in 2019, the couple later shifted to Canada and subsequently announced their decision to step back as working royals and depart the UK in January of the following year. Presently, they reside in California, USA.
