A new documentary on the life of Terry Fox, titled “Run Terry Run,” has unveiled its trailer today, a month before its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This documentary, utilizing nearly 100 reels of recently discovered archival footage, offers an exclusive glimpse into the 1980 Marathon of Hope undertaken by the British Columbia athlete and cancer research advocate.
The trailer showcases conversations and insights from key figures such as van driver and friend Doug Alward, Terry Fox’s younger brother Darrell Fox, and Terry Fox himself during his ambitious cross-country run at the age of 21 to raise funds for cancer research following the amputation of his leg due to osteogenic sarcoma. In one poignant moment from the trailer, Fox expresses his thoughts on reaching Vancouver and his unwavering dedication to his cause.
Director Sean Menard from Toronto obtained the original footage from filmmaker John Simpson, who had originally presumed it was discarded after producing his own documentary in 1981. Menard’s quest for authentic footage was supported by the Terry Fox Foundation, leading to the discovery of the reels in a storage unit near his residence. The footage was meticulously restored to 4K quality and serves as the foundation for Menard’s documentary, first exhibited at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto last year.
The documentary, as reviewed by Canadian Running, stands out for its unique approach of utilizing voiceovers from individuals closely associated with Fox, including Alward, Darrell Fox, Leslie Scrivener, and Darryl Sittler. This distinctive storytelling method eschews traditional interviews, offering a more immersive experience for viewers.
Terry Fox initiated his marathon on April 12, 1980, with the goal of running across Canada from St. John’s to Victoria. Despite having to halt his journey near Thunder Bay, Ontario, due to the spread of cancer to his lungs, Fox’s remarkable efforts raised over $24 million during his lifetime, equivalent to a dollar from every Canadian. The Terry Fox Foundation recently surpassed $1 billion in funds raised for cancer research.
Fox’s legacy has been commemorated through various documentaries over the years, with his image set to appear on Canada’s $5 banknote in 2024. Menard’s documentary captures Fox’s transformation from a determined young runner with a grand vision to a seasoned individual navigating the demands of fame and personal challenges.
Featuring an original score by composer Tom Caffey, known for his work on “The Last Dance,” the documentary “Run Terry Run” is set to premiere at TIFF on September 19, preceding the 46th annual Terry Fox Run. The film is slated for a theatrical release on October 9, 2026.
