A series of powerful explosions shook the Ukrainian capital as a ballistic missile strike by Russia caused a power station to be destroyed.
The night sky over Kyiv’s left bank was illuminated by a massive explosion and fire that swept through parts of the city following the missile assault.
This attack, which will disrupt heating due to the approaching Ukrainian winter, occurred shortly after Vladimir Putin’s representative Kirill Dmitriev suggested in Washington that Russia, the US, and Ukraine were nearing a diplomatic resolution.
However, the recent destruction on the ground paints a grim picture, with casualties and damage inflicted on the Ukrainian capital during the Russian strikes overnight.
Donald Trump announced plans to engage with Chinese President Xi Jinping, an ally of Putin, to halt the Russian conflict. Trump expressed his intention during the start of his Asian tour, emphasizing the need to end the war through various means such as oil, energy, or other strategies, seeking China’s assistance in dealing with Russia.
This statement followed the imposition of new US sanctions on Moscow earlier in the week, specifically targeting Russia’s major oil companies in an effort to inflict economic pressure on Putin.
The overnight assault resulted in the destruction of the CHP-6 power plant, responsible for providing hot water heating to Kyiv’s left bank. Additionally, a kindergarten, the third to be damaged in a week, was affected, along with a warehouse complex engulfed in flames. The strikes on the capital caused at least one fatality and ten injuries from missile and drone attacks.
Proponents of the Russian invasion have advocated for a complete halt of electricity supply to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, in the Dnipropetrovsk region, two individuals lost their lives – a firefighter and a civilian woman – with nearly a dozen others wounded as residential properties suffered damage.
These incidents followed the deaths of three individuals due to Russian attacks in Kherson the previous day. Russia launched a barrage of nine Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 62 strike drones targeting Ukraine.
Explosions reverberated in Volgograd as Ukraine struck a crucial electricity transmission point primarily serving Moscow and other regions. Ukraine reportedly deployed HIMARS missiles to damage a dam in Russia’s Belgorod region, affecting sluice gates without destroying the structure.
The recent attacks in the ongoing conflict coincide with heightened concerns among Moscow diplomats following Trump’s latest oil-related sanctions aimed at disrupting a significant revenue stream for the country.
Dmitriev reportedly traveled to the US for discreet discussions with Trump administration officials. In a statement, the envoy portrayed the conflict as moving closer to a resolution than many observers believe, despite the Kremlin rejecting Trump’s call for an immediate end to the conflict on the current frontlines.
