“Ryanair Extends Bag Drop Closure Time to Enhance Passenger Experience”

Date:

Ryanair has announced changes to its luggage rules, with all check-in and bag drop services at airports closing 60 minutes before scheduled departure starting November 10, an increase from the current 40 minutes. The budget airline notes this adjustment is aimed at allowing passengers more time to navigate airport security and passport queues, reducing instances of missed flight departures due to queue delays.

This modification will benefit the 20% of Ryanair passengers who check their bags, providing them with extra time to pass through security and reach their departure gate before boarding commences. Ryanair is also actively installing more self-service bag-drop kiosks, with plans for 95% of its operating airports to have them by October.

According to Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer, Dara Brady, the extended closure time for check-in and bag drops will enhance the travel experience for customers who choose to check in a bag. This change is particularly valuable during peak travel periods when queues can be longer. The introduction of self-service kiosks at most Ryanair airports aims to streamline the bag-drop process, minimize desk queues, and further improve punctuality for passengers who opt for checked baggage.

Recent implementation of the entry/exit system (EES) has led to challenges for Ryanair travelers, with long queues reported at some European airports. The EES, operational at all Schengen Area border checkpoints since April 10, requires non-EU nationals, including British citizens, to register biometric data for verification during border crossings. Ryanair has responded to incidents at Milan Bergamo airport, stating that passengers arriving at the boarding gate desk before closure would have been accommodated.
