A female traveler on a Ryanair flight was reportedly charged £75 because her suitcase exceeded the airline’s bag sizer dimensions, despite her prior payment for additional baggage allowance. The incident took place at Birmingham Airport when Gilly Bachelor was heading to Malaga, Spain, and was stopped at the boarding gate.
Even though she had purchased priority boarding and extra cabin bag options, Gilly was allegedly told that her bag could not be taken onboard. Consequently, she was forced to pay an extra £75 on top of the £125 flight cost. Describing the encounter as “stressful,” Gilly, a 55-year-old from Brewood near Cannock, Staffs, mentioned that she had not faced such issues on previous flights, except with Ryanair.
During boarding, a staff member inspected each bag, and approximately 20 passengers, including Gilly, were fined for oversized bags. Gilly, who runs a travel agency, claimed that Ryanair’s strict enforcement of rules might be driven by the staff’s incentive to flag oversized bags, even though the fines only contribute a small portion to their income.
She advised travelers to carefully review baggage size regulations and invest in compliant luggage to avoid last-minute fines at the gate. Gilly also shared her experience of flying back with easyJet, where her bag met the requirements without any issues, as it would have on Jet2.
