Sainsbury’s has discontinued its Chop Chop rapid delivery app and merged its functionality into the main Sainsbury’s app. Initially launched in 2016, Chop Chop aimed to deliver groceries within 60 minutes at a premium price and was operational in 50 Sainsbury’s stores.
Regular users of the service may have noticed that the standalone Chop Chop app has been eliminated. Attempts to download it now redirect users to the main Sainsbury’s app. Jim Banks, the head of experience design at Sainsbury’s, announced the decommissioning of the app to streamline the shopping experience for customers. He expressed this change on LinkedIn, stating, “Chop Chop is dead. Long live Chop Chop!”
Banks further explained that the decision to integrate Chop Chop into the main Sainsbury’s app was made to eliminate the need for customers to switch between apps. This transition was the result of collaborative efforts from various teams within the company, emphasizing a simplified ecosystem to enhance the shopping experience.
Chop Chop previously competed with Tesco’s Whoosh rapid delivery service, which promises delivery within 20 minutes. In other supermarket news from the UK, Co-op revealed plans to open 18 new or revamped stores in the first quarter of 2026.
The inaugural Co-op store for 2026 will open in Willowbrook Park, Didcot in Oxfordshire, part of a new neighborhood development. Additionally, several stores will undergo refurbishments, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated site in Ealing, London.
Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, highlighted the company’s focus on establishing local stores as community hubs that cater to the needs of residents. These stores prioritize quality products, offer value to members and customers, and feature attractive deals and promotions.
Co-op also announced a commitment to creating thousands of new apprenticeships over the coming years. Through a £70 million investment under its Levy Share service, the company aims to provide 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030, contributing to workforce development and growth.
