“Sainsbury’s to Divest Argos for £120M, Focus on Food”

Date:

Sainsbury’s has agreed to divest Argos for a minimum of £120 million to refocus on its primary food business. The transaction involves the sale of Argos stores and collection points to Swift Partners, a newly established entity for this purpose.

Despite the change in ownership, Sainsbury’s assured that it will be business as usual for Argos, which will operate normally through standalone stores, locations within Sainsbury’s stores, online delivery, and collection points. Additionally, Swift will take over Argos’ pet insurance operations and product warranty services.

In the deal, Swift will also acquire Sainsbury’s distribution center in Daventry, as well as Sainsbury’s sourcing offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Sainsbury’s had originally acquired Argos for £1.4 billion in 2016, subsequently closing numerous standalone Argos stores and transitioning to collection points within supermarket locations.

With more than 1,100 collection points currently in operation, all physical and online services in the Republic of Ireland were permanently closed in June 2023. Simon Roberts, Chief Executive of J Sainsbury plc, expressed gratitude towards Argos colleagues for their dedication and hard work, emphasizing that the future of Argos remains strong.

Swift Partners comprises retail experts, including former Co-operative Group leader Richard Pennycook, ex-Morrisons executive Trevor Strain, and the support of Matt Truman’s retail investment firm, True Capital. Sainsbury’s anticipates receiving cash proceeds of at least £120 million from the sale, with an initial payment of £70 million upon completion, expected in February 2027.

Richard Pennycook highlighted the respect for Argos’ senior management and the intention to enhance its strengths, emphasizing plans to improve customer offerings, digital capabilities, and nationwide presence.
