Saudi Arabia’s Neom Mega-City Project Faces Downsizing

Date:

A grand and futuristic city known as Neom was envisioned to revolutionize Saudi Arabia, moving the nation away from its reliance on oil. However, due to escalating costs and delays, the ambitious project has been significantly downsized. Spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with a budget of £365bn, the initial plan for the £6.8tn mega-city was to be completed by 2030, featuring a groundbreaking structure called The Line.

The Line, a visionary concept spanning 125 miles with mirror-clad skyscrapers linked by green walkways, aimed to accommodate nine million residents and address the needs of Saudi Arabia’s expanding population. Designed on a small footprint of 34 square kilometers, these properties were intended to maximize city efficiencies and provide easy access to essential services within a five-minute walk, along with high-speed rail connectivity for swift transit.

Despite substantial investments made by Saudi Arabia, the practical challenges have led to a reassessment of the project, potentially resulting in a more modest approach. The Crown Prince, expressing frustration over delays, is now considering shifting the focus of Neom towards smaller-scale initiatives like artificial intelligence data centers.

While a review of Neom is ongoing, the fate of The Line remains uncertain as plans may be scaled down. Initially, Neom was set to include a vast nature reserve and the Trojena mountain retreat featuring ski slopes and a moderate climate. However, delays have impacted the completion timeline, with only the Sindalah Red Sea yachting resort operational, having faced criticism for its high costs and subsequent leadership changes.

Neom’s extravagant launch event, attended by celebrities like Will Smith and Alicia Keys, raised concerns about the project’s expenses, prompting a reevaluation of its direction. Neom has been contacted for further comments on the current status of the development.
