A Saudi physician has been handed a life sentence for crashing a rented BMW into a holiday market in Germany, resulting in the deaths of six individuals.
Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, aged 51, stood trial at the state court in November following the incident on December 20, 2024, in Magdeburg, Germany. The attack claimed the lives of five women and a young boy, with numerous others sustaining injuries.
The assault, involving a rented BMW X3, lasted slightly over a minute and saw the vehicle reaching speeds of up to 30mph. The court determined that the 51-year-old bore “particularly serious” responsibility, as reported by the German news agency dpa.
The life sentence imposed on him entails that he will not be eligible for parole after the standard 15 years in Germany. Investigators confirmed that al-Abdulmohsen was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Authorities revealed that his actions appeared to stem from dissatisfaction with a legal dispute’s outcome and multiple failed criminal complaints. The perpetrator acted alone in planning the attack.
Officials noted that the suspect did not fit the typical profile of extremist attackers. He identified himself as a former Muslim critical of Islam and publicly supported far-right ideologies.
Despite having no prior history of violence, al-Abdulmohsen had drawn authorities’ attention for threatening behavior in the past. The Magdeburg incident was part of a series of assaults involving immigrants that brought the immigration issue to the forefront of Germany’s national election campaign in February 2025.
The defendant arrived in Germany in 2006 and was granted permanent residency status.
