A teenage boy in Scotland underwent groundbreaking surgery using new technology after experiencing leg pain that was initially mistaken for growing pains. Toby Peart, 13, from Strathpeffer, was among the first patients to benefit from a robot-assisted camera procedure.
In April 2025, Toby started feeling pins and needles and pain in his left leg, which worsened over time. A subsequent MRI scan at Raigmore Hospital revealed a brain tumour, leading to his referral to a Glasgow facility for specialized care. At the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, a cutting-edge 3D exoscope technology was employed to improve precision in intricate brain surgeries.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde proudly announced the installation of the B Braun Aesculap Aeos 3D Robotic Assisted Exoscope, offering exceptional image quality, strong illumination, and improved depth perception, a first of its kind in Scotland.
Following further tests confirming a non-cancerous 13-14mm tumour on the right side of his brain, Toby underwent successful surgery in November at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, where the 3D exoscope technology played a crucial role.
Marc, Toby’s father, commended the medical team for their care during the innovative surgery. Marc shared the challenging experience of discovering Toby’s condition and the rapid progression post-surgery, which initially included weakness and paralysis on his left side but later showcased remarkable improvement.
Toby’s recovery journey was marked by significant progress, allowing him to return home within a week and back to school in January. The installation of the B Braun Aesculap Aeos 3D Robotic Assisted Exoscope at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has revolutionized surgical procedures, offering enhanced visualization and improved surgical outcomes.
Consultant neurosurgeon Roddy O’Kane emphasized the benefits of the new technology, highlighting its ability to provide superior views and angles compared to traditional microscopes, especially in pediatric brain surgeries. The enhanced visualization capability contributes to safer surgeries and ultimately better results.
