“Shaka Hislop Condemns Manchester United Co-Owner’s Immigration Comments”

Date:

The head of the organization Show Racism the Red Card criticized Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe on its 30th anniversary. Shaka Hislop, a former professional footballer, expressed shock at Ratcliffe’s comments on immigration, where he suggested that the UK was facing economic challenges due to immigrants and people on benefits. Ratcliffe later apologized for any offense caused.

In response, Shaka, who serves as the charity’s honorary President, rebuked Ratcliffe for his stereotyping and divisive remarks, especially in light of recent racist incidents involving players like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka. Shaka highlighted the diversity within Manchester United and emphasized the importance of combating racism in football and society.

Show Racism the Red Card was established in 1996 with a donation from Shaka. The charity has impacted 1.5 million young individuals through its programs, maintaining a steadfast commitment to its cause. A special event commemorating the 30th anniversary will take place at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, emphasizing the power of football in promoting anti-racism education and celebrating diversity.

Shaka’s statements came after a billboard critical of Ratcliffe appeared outside Old Trafford, installed by the group ‘Everyone Hates Elon’. The billboard denounced Ratcliffe’s actions and highlighted the positive contributions of immigrants to the city. Ratcliffe’s remarks were condemned by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and anti-racism advocates for echoing far-right narratives.

Following the backlash, Ratcliffe expressed regret over his choice of words. ‘Everyone Hates Elon’ criticized Ratcliffe for relocating to Monaco to avoid UK taxes and questioned his contributions to the country amid struggles faced by hospitals and schools.
