“Shomrim Volunteer Helps Police Apprehend Golders Green Stabbing Suspect”

Date:

A Golders Green suspect was apprehended by law enforcement with the aid of a valiant patrol officer affiliated with the Jewish community safety organization Shomrim.

Yonathan Elkouby, a volunteer, joined forces with two Metropolitan police officers to subdue the alleged assailant following a stabbing incident outside a synagogue. Elkouby recounted the intense moment when he and the police successfully tackled the suspect to the ground after a confrontation.

Shomrim, derived from Hebrew meaning “watchers” or “guards,” is likened to a private law enforcement unit due to their distinctive uniforms, which may include stab-resistant vests and yellow caps. They conduct routine patrols in specific areas of north and east London and offer a round-the-clock emergency hotline resembling the standard 999 service.

Despite their collaboration with the Met Police, Shomrim lacks legal authority and operates as a charitable organization funded solely by private donations. While primarily serving the Jewish community, they extend their assistance to all members of the public irrespective of religious affiliation.

Shomrim branches are active in Jewish neighborhoods globally. The establishment of the Shomrim NW London branch in 2008 followed a surge in criminal activities in the region. They currently conduct safety patrols six nights a week, with volunteers receiving training from the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command.

Shomrim emphasizes that their volunteer-based organization, comprising both men and women, dedicates itself to safeguarding the community, aiding in the apprehension and prosecution of numerous offenders annually.

Ben Grossnass, a Shomrim officer, has responded to several serious incidents recently, including the destruction of private Jewish ambulances near the scene of a recent attack. He stresses the essential role of Shomrim, particularly in combatting hate crimes and ensuring community safety.

Expressing concerns for his children’s safety in the UK, Ben urges governmental support for organizations like Shomrim to enhance public safety. Shomrim’s proactive response to incidents, including the recent terror attack, underscores the critical nature of their operations in safeguarding the community.

Shomrim’s website highlights their success in aiding non-Jewish victims of crimes, particularly in hate crime cases. The organization’s volunteers undergo rigorous training, including counter-terrorism and crime prevention, to effectively serve the community and collaborate with law enforcement agencies.

Operating primarily in designated areas, Shomrim volunteers serve as additional eyes and ears for the Metropolitan Police, reporting suspicious activities and bridging the gap until official police response. Their visible presence deters criminal activities and allows for swift responses to emergencies, showcasing their commitment to community well-being.
