In a scathing critique, Sir Ed Davey warned that a Britain led by Nigel Farage would resemble a Trump-inspired dystopia with support from what he termed as the “forces of darkness.”
Addressing supporters, the Lib Dem leader expressed concerns that under Reform leadership, racism and misogyny would thrive with tacit approval, and the NHS would face dismantlement. Sir Ed emphasized the moral obligation of the Liberal Democrats to unite against Reform in his keynote speech.
However, his remarks provoked a strong backlash, particularly when he suggested that gun regulations would be relaxed under Farage’s governance, necessitating children to be prepared for potential mass shootings. Reform swiftly dismissed these claims as nonsensical and labeled Sir Ed as irrelevant.
Sir Ed painted a grim picture of Farage’s envisioned nation, highlighting the absence of a functioning NHS leading to exorbitant healthcare costs or denial of services. He also criticized the potential reliance on costly fossil fuels from Putin and environmental degradation through fracking amidst worsening climate change.
Furthermore, Sir Ed pointed out Farage’s past opposition to the UK’s handgun ban, implying a rollback of gun laws under Reform. Despite Farage’s previous stance, the Reform party maintains it has no intentions of loosening firearm regulations.
Warning against the transformation of Britain into a mirror image of Trump’s America, Sir Ed urged action to prevent Farage from exacerbating existing societal issues. He accused Farage of aligning with figures like Elon Musk, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump, contrasting their ideologies with the values of the Liberal Democrats who stand for the British populace.
Appealing to disillusioned Tory voters, Sir Ed called for their support to protect the country and secure victories together. Additionally, he signaled a strategic shift towards attracting Labour supporters, criticizing the current government’s lack of foresight and likening Labour to “Continuity Sunak.”
During his speech, which extensively referenced Farage, Sir Ed’s remarks prompted a response from Farage, who commented on Sir Ed’s fixation and offered to cover the cost of a psychiatrist.
