“Slow Internet? Disconnect Phantom Devices for Faster Speeds”

Date:

If your internet connection seems slow, the reason might be simple. Recent findings from Uswitch reveal that many homeowners underestimate the number of devices connected to their routers. On average, British households have approximately 16 web-connected gadgets spread throughout their living spaces.

Devices like video doorbells, which constantly send data over the internet, can cause slowdowns affecting activities such as video calls and streaming services like Netflix, especially in homes with basic internet packages. Broadband can be likened to a road, where increased traffic leads to slower speeds. Full-fibre connections offer wider “roads” that handle traffic better than older copper cables.

A common issue is the presence of ‘phantom’ devices, which remain connected to the router despite not being actively used. These devices continuously communicate with the router, causing unnecessary network congestion.

To enhance connectivity, consider upgrading to faster full-fibre speeds if your home is filled with smart devices like TVs, doorbells, speakers, plugs, and robot vacuums. Additionally, disconnect any unused devices to potentially boost internet speeds immediately.

Max Beckett, a broadband expert at Uswitch, emphasizes the importance of identifying and disconnecting dormant devices to prevent them from hogging bandwidth. Conducting a digital spring cleaning by powering down or disconnecting old, unused tech can significantly improve network performance.

While full fibre broadband offers the best solution for buffering issues, managing connected devices and limiting high-definition video streaming among multiple users can also make a substantial impact on internet speed optimization.
