Passengers onboard a Chinese Tianjin Airlines flight were alarmed when a power bank malfunctioned, causing thick smoke to fill the cabin during the journey. The incident occurred as the plane neared its destination, prompting concerns among travelers about a potential fire outbreak.
Witnesses described the smoke as dense and the smell as intense, although there was no visible fire. Cabin crew swiftly responded to the situation, reassuring passengers that firefighting procedures were being implemented to address the issue.
The power bank overheated as the aircraft was about to land on June 15, following its departure from Tianjin Binhai International Airport in China and subsequent arrival at Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport in Guangdong Province. Despite the disruption, the flight landed safely, and passengers were instructed to disembark without their belongings temporarily.
Tianjin Airlines confirmed the incident, stating that the smoke-emitting power bank was promptly managed by the crew in adherence to safety protocols. No injuries or damage to the aircraft were reported, and the flight resumed after a delay of approximately one hour and 12 minutes.
Authorities emphasized the importance of ensuring that power banks meet safety standards to prevent similar incidents in the future. Airlines, including Tianjin Airlines, enforce strict regulations regarding the carriage of power banks, permitting them only in hand luggage or on passengers’ persons to mitigate risks associated with such devices.
This occurrence highlights the ongoing efforts within the aviation industry to enhance safety measures concerning portable electronic devices, aiming to minimize the occurrence of hazardous situations during flights.
