Spain Heatwave Caution for Tourists: 212 Deaths Reported

Date:

Tourists planning trips to Spain are being cautioned as the country grapples with a heatwave that has led to around 212 reported deaths in recent days. The fatalities have been linked to the exceptionally high temperatures, with central and northern regions experiencing the worst impact. The peak of excess mortality occurred on Wednesday, June 24, with 96 reported deaths, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

Diana Gómez, a scientist at the National Centre for Epidemiology (CNE), mentioned that the current figures are preliminary and may fluctuate, with more stable data expected in a week. In response to the heatwave, British tourists in Spain are being advised to reduce alcohol intake as alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks can exacerbate dehydration during hot weather.

Alcohol is known to increase urine production, leading to dehydration, which can be particularly dangerous in extreme heat when the body is already losing fluids through sweating. Both tourists and residents are urged to stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, wear lightweight and breathable clothing, seek shade in cool areas, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest times of the day. The UK’s Foreign Office recommends monitoring severe weather warnings from the Spanish Meteorological Office (AEMET) and European Meteorological Services, especially during the summer months.
