“Special Measures Enforced in Tunstall Amid Unrest Concerns”

Date:

Concerns of potential unrest in a UK city tonight have prompted law enforcement to implement special measures. Authorities have enforced a Section 60 order in Tunstall, located in Stoke-on-Trent, in response to information regarding potential violence in the area. This decision was made following the discovery of a hammer inside a vehicle. The Section 60 order, covering specific streets, will be effective until 11 pm.

Under this order, police officers have been granted the authority to conduct stop-and-search operations on individuals suspected of involvement in violent or weapon-related offenses, without the necessity of having reasonable grounds. Additionally, officers are empowered to request the removal of masks or face coverings from suspects.

A significant police presence was observed in the Hollywall Lane vicinity of Tunstall earlier today, as reported by StokeonTrentLive. A spokesperson from Staffordshire Police stated that Section 60 powers are being utilized in the Tunstall area, allowing for stop and search operations for weapons. A specific authorization (s60AA) has also been granted to require individuals to remove face coverings.

The spokesperson clarified that Section 60 permits uniformed constables to search pedestrians and vehicle occupants for offensive weapons, irrespective of any suspicion. This type of search, known as a suspicionless search, requires approval from senior officers based on the belief of serious violence occurring or being imminent in a particular area. The legal basis for this action stems from the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, specifically Sections 60 and 60AA.

Staffordshire Police emphasized that the order does not entail indiscriminate stops, and officers will adhere to standard stop and search protocols. This includes providing explanations for the stop, detailing the object being searched for, citing the relevant legislation, recording the interaction via body-worn cameras, and offering a receipt to the individual stopped.
