A popular lido in Kent is set to welcome visitors for the upcoming summer season as temperatures rise. The Strand Lido in Gillingham, often likened to pools in Greece and the Mediterranean, has been a cherished spot for locals since its establishment in 1896. Drawing both local families and tourists, the lido offers a picturesque setting with its crystal-clear waters, splashpad, and a 300-meter lazy river, creating a vacation-like atmosphere.
Situated just over an hour from London, the Strand Lido stands out as the sole riverside saltwater pool in the UK. Sourced from the River Medway, the pool water undergoes filtration and chlorination to ensure safe swimming conditions. With its vibrant colors and Mediterranean-inspired design, the lido exudes a lively and inviting ambiance, captivating visitors of all ages.
Featuring six 25-meter swimming lanes, a toddler paddling pool, and whimsical water fountains, the lido caters to a diverse range of guests. Operating seasonally, the pool’s 2026 opening date is confirmed for Saturday, May 23. Subsequently, weekend operations will transition to daily openings during the school summer holidays before concluding in September. Visitors can secure their pool slots by booking online through the Medway Council website.
Beyond the pool facilities, the complex offers sunbathing areas, a café serving meals, and ample shaded spots for picnicking. Additional amenities include changing rooms, poolside showers, and a shop selling pool essentials. Moreover, visitors can enjoy the Strand Leisure Park’s miniature railway and scenic riverside walks during the seasonal openings.
Visitors have praised the lido’s offerings, with one mentioning the various pools, changing rooms, and café amenities, while suggesting a need for more shaded areas. Another visitor highlighted the relaxing lazy river experience, evoking a holiday vibe.
