A young man saw his career aspirations shattered by a relentless and cunning stalker who turned his life into a nightmare. Riley Taylor, 22, faced torment from Elliot McLelland, 24, who masqueraded as an MI5 operative to infiltrate Riley’s world and threaten his job as a Ryanair flight attendant.
McLelland relentlessly pursued Riley, shadowing him at work, loitering at the airport, and even booking flights on which Riley was scheduled to work. Despite being handed a four-month suspended prison sentence and a five-year restraining order by Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, Riley felt the punishment was inadequate, having been forced to reconstruct his career and existence following the ordeal.
Recruited at 18 by Cabin Crew International to work on Ryanair flights from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Riley cherished what he called his “dream job.” Riley recounted encountering a mysterious individual at the airport, sparking curiosity about the person’s presence in the lounge area before flights, initially assuming the individual might be in need.
As their interactions progressed from a dating app to Snapchat, McLelland fabricated elaborate tales, portraying himself as an undercover agent at the airport on a covert MI5 mission investigating alleged corruption related to a bomb scare in Kensington. Despite initial skepticism, Riley began to trust McLelland, who then began stalking him, taking photos, and monitoring his movements even during vacations.
Desperate for help, Riley disclosed the stalking incidents to HR representatives from Cabin Crew International and Ryanair, seeking support based on evidence he had gathered. However, his pleas were dismissed, leading to Riley’s dismissal from his cherished job on July 27. Struggling to cope with McLelland’s persistent harassment, Riley felt abandoned and isolated, eventually being suspended from work and forced to relocate due to ongoing stalking episodes.
Expressing disbelief over Ryanair’s inaction, Riley lamented the loss of his dream job and the distress caused by McLelland’s actions. McLelland, residing in Old Swan, Merseyside, pleaded guilty to stalking charges but evaded sentencing, prolonging Riley’s ordeal until his eventual arrest earlier this year. Despite serving a brief prison stint on remand, McLelland received a suspended sentence, bringing a semblance of closure to the traumatic chapter in Riley’s life.
