Keir Starmer has firmly responded to Donald Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs due to disagreement over his Greenland plans, emphasizing that the UK will not succumb to such pressure tactics.
During the PMQs session, Mr. Starmer criticized the attempts to coerce NATO allies who oppose the Greenland initiative, labeling it as inappropriate. He mentioned the upcoming visit of the Danish prime minister and asserted that Britain stands firm on its principles regarding Greenland’s future, unaffected by tariff threats.
In a notable rebuke of the US President, Mr. Starmer condemned Mr. Trump for altering his stance on the Chagos Islands agreement, suggesting it was a deliberate move to influence the UK’s position on Greenland based on his own values and beliefs.
Donald Trump has issued ultimatums to impose 10% tariffs on Britain and other European allies starting February 1 if they do not support his Greenland purchase, with a warning of increasing the tariffs to 25% on NATO partners by June.
Furthermore, President Trump took an unexpected turn by criticizing the Chagos Islands deal, previously endorsed by him, linking it to the Greenland issue. He expressed strong disapproval of the move, describing it as an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY.”
In response to these developments, Mr. Starmer addressed fellow MPs, highlighting the President’s apparent attempts to pressure the UK on Greenland through strategic rhetoric shifts. He affirmed his unwavering stance on the matter, refusing to yield to external demands.
During the same parliamentary session, Kemi Badenoch, representing the Tory party, accused Mr. Starmer of lacking the strength to defend the UK’s national interests. However, the PM defended his actions, emphasizing the importance of working with NATO allies to safeguard national security and ensure unity within the alliance.
