“Starmer Warns of Rising Hostility if Reform Wins By-Election”

Date:

Keir Starmer has expressed concerns about a potential rise in animosity if Reform emerges victorious in a critical by-election this week.

The Prime Minister made an unexpected appearance in Gorton and Denton, located in Greater Manchester, today ahead of the closely contested vote scheduled for Thursday. During his visit, he reportedly met with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham as they put aside their differences to compete for the seat, previously won by Labour with a substantial majority in 2024.

This development follows a decision by Labour’s governing body, including Mr. Starmer, to prevent Mr. Burnham from participating in the election. Despite this, the Greater Manchester Mayor, who has hinted at his aspirations for leadership, has been actively campaigning alongside candidate Angeliki Stogia in recent weeks.

Addressing party supporters, Mr. Starmer emphasized the direct competition between Labour and Reform, stating, “Let us prioritize hope over hostility.” In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, he highlighted the significance of Labour’s commitment to fostering unity within communities and contrasted it with the divisive tactics championed by Reform.

Mr. Starmer accused Reform of seeking the seat to promote divisive ideologies, cautioning against the potential repercussions of a Reform victory. He underscored the importance of safeguarding against hostility and ensuring a hopeful future under a Labour government.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister criticized the Greens for their controversial drug legalization stance, labeling it as “disgusting.” He warned that supporting the Green Party in the by-election could inadvertently benefit Reform, citing a previous election outcome where Labour lost by a small margin, resulting in a Reform Member of Parliament.

Labour’s Chief Whip Jonny Reynolds emphasized the binary choice facing voters in Gorton and Denton, urging them to support a candidate deeply rooted in the community rather than a party promoting divisive politics. He highlighted Labour’s initiatives aimed at addressing the cost of living, a key concern for local residents.

In conclusion, the upcoming by-election is poised to be a pivotal showdown between Labour and Reform, with competing visions for the constituency’s future.
