“Study: Flight Crews at High Risk for Radiation-Related Cancers”

Date:

Flight attendants and pilots face the highest risk of radiation-related cancers, surpassing even those who handle radioactive materials, as per a recent study. Cosmic radiation originating from space, though minimal at Earth’s surface, poses a greater exposure risk for individuals flying at high altitudes.

Previous smaller studies hinted at increased cancer death rates among frequent fliers, particularly pilots and flight attendants. The latest study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed national data from over 12 million death certificates, examining cancer death rates linked to radiation exposure. Occupations such as pilots and flight attendants showed the highest percentage of radiation-related cancer deaths among more than 500 occupations.

The study challenges the belief that flight crews’ elevated skin cancer risk stems from sunny layovers. Researchers highlighted the cockpit environment as a significant factor, suggesting that reduced layover times and busy flight schedules contribute to the increased cancer risks.

Flight attendants had approximately 50% higher odds of dying from radiation-related cancers compared to the general working population, while pilots had a 36% higher likelihood. Despite limitations in the study—such as an inability to quantify specific exposure sources or potential misclassifications on death certificates—the findings underscore the importance of addressing radiation exposure risks in aircrews.

The study authors emphasized the need for heightened vigilance in monitoring cancer risks among those in high-altitude professions. They recommended regular skin examinations and earlier or more frequent mammograms for women in such jobs. Additionally, healthcare providers attending to pilots and flight attendants should maintain a high index of suspicion for cancer when assessing these individuals.
