Nicola Sturgeon fought back tears while discussing a gift she received from her estranged husband, who recently admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from the SNP.
The former Scottish First Minister expressed feeling unjustly punished for a crime she did not commit and stated she would not apologize for her ex-husband’s wrongdoing. Sturgeon opened up about the situation following Peter Murrell’s guilty plea and their divorce announcement in January 2025.
Murrell, who served as the SNP chief executive from 2001 to 2023, used the embezzled funds for various purchases, ranging from luxury items like a motorhome and expensive watches to more mundane items such as hand cream and groceries. Sturgeon made it clear that she takes responsibility for her own actions but refuses to be held accountable for someone else’s criminal behavior.
In an interview with BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, Sturgeon emphasized her stance, stating, “I am not responsible for the crimes that my former husband committed and I’m not going to apologize for somebody else’s crimes.” She highlighted the importance of personal accountability and rejected the notion of being blamed for her ex-husband’s actions.
Reflecting on a poignant moment, Sturgeon recounted how Murrell gifted her a Shetland necklace, purchased with misappropriated money. Despite her initial appreciation for the necklace, learning the truth behind its acquisition brought her a mix of emotions, including pain and confusion.
Expressing her deep disappointment and hurt, Sturgeon described her feelings towards Murrell as beyond anger, as his actions not only betrayed her personally but also exposed her to public scrutiny and humiliation. She shared her empathy for other women who have experienced similar betrayals and emphasized the emotional toll of such situations.
Sturgeon’s emotional response to the situation underscores the complex and challenging personal repercussions of her estranged husband’s actions.
