“Sun-Allergic Master’s Student Shares UV Horror”

Date:

A young woman who has a sun allergy shared her experiences with the rapid onset of severe symptoms from exposure to UV rays. Jennifer Broyden, 24, suffers from an autoimmune disease that causes her skin to burn, blister, and even peel off within as little as 15 seconds of being in the sun.

Jennifer, a master’s student, developed this condition as a side effect of her dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease that affects muscles and skin. Her extreme photosensitivity makes sun exposure unbearable, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, rashes, and fatigue.

Despite facing initial skepticism from some doctors attributing her symptoms to stress or overexertion, Jennifer’s condition worsened until a specialist diagnosed her with dermatomyositis in December 2021. Sun exposure triggers intense reactions in her body, with even brief exposure causing skin damage.

Jennifer has had to adjust her lifestyle to protect herself from the sun, using high SPF sunscreen, UV-protective clothing, and accessories like hats and sunglasses. She strictly avoids sun exposure during peak hours and takes precautions even while driving to minimize UV exposure.

Managing her condition involves infusion therapies and medications to suppress her immune system. Jennifer’s life has drastically changed since her diagnosis, impacting activities she once enjoyed like running outdoors and going to the beach. She has adapted to these changes and found purpose in sharing her experiences online with others facing similar challenges.
