“Suspicious Object Explosion Halts Augsburg Train Station”

Date:

An explosion near a train station in Augsburg, Germany, led to a temporary closure of the transport hub after a suspicious object was discovered on Wednesday morning. Police later confirmed that the object was harmless, and the train station reopened at 10 a.m., with train services resuming.

Authorities reported that an unidentified object exploded near the station around 3:15 a.m., causing minor injuries to a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, both Ukrainian citizens. Subsequently, another suspicious object was found at the main train station but did not detonate, prompting the station’s closure at 8:30 a.m.

Police spokesperson Timo Küfner assured the public that the situation was under control, stating that the investigation into the incident was ongoing. Explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office were at the scene to gather information.

The disruption caused by the incident affected road traffic and public transportation in the vicinity of the station during the early morning hours. Initial reports suggested that the explosion was not targeted at the train station itself but occurred near a jewelry store.

Augsburg, a city located in Bavaria with a population of 308,000 residents, is situated approximately 78 kilometers northwest of Munich. This incident follows recent tensions between Germany and Russia, with Germany accusing Russia of an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in the previous month, leading to diplomatic measures taken against Moscow.

Western officials have accused Moscow of engaging in a campaign of sabotage and disruption across Europe to destabilize nations and undermine support for Ukraine.
