An island known for its medieval charm and stunning beaches could potentially become a prime target for Russian President Vladimir Putin in the event of a World War 3 outbreak.
Rising concerns about a global conflict highlight the possibility of a war between NATO and Russia, with a tranquil holiday destination in the Baltic Sea possibly getting entangled in the conflict.
Despite its central location in the waterway, Gotland, the largest and most popular island in Sweden, attracts over a million tourists annually with its scenic coastal views and well-preserved medieval town of Visby, a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing Viking heritage and picturesque landscapes.
Although Gotland is renowned for its beauty, the island is now undergoing military preparations with the construction of missile installations, barracks, and surveillance facilities. These measures come amid escalating fears of a potential Russian attack, as reported by the Express.
Experts suggest that Stockholm’s military expansion on Gotland serves two main purposes: deterring Putin from invading the territory to launch attacks on Europe and monitoring the authoritarian leader’s activities in the region.
Located just 300km from Kaliningrad, a key port city serving as Russia’s enclave, Gotland holds strategic significance in the Baltic Sea region, where both entities are strategically positioned.
Niklas Granholm, an expert at Sweden’s Defence Research Agency, emphasized the historical importance of Gotland in controlling the Baltic Sea region, especially during the Cold War era. Control over the island with advanced missile systems could provide dominance over the northern Baltic Sea region due to the precision and range of these weapons.
Former US Army Officer Ben Hodges warned that Russia’s capture of Gotland would significantly shift the balance of power in the region.
Gotland, demilitarized in 2005 post-Cold War, was re-armed in 2015 in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in Ukraine in 2014. Sweden’s NATO membership in 2024 followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Swedish Armed Forces plan to deploy a minimum of 4,000 soldiers in Gotland by 2027 to reinforce the island’s defense capabilities.
