A man in northern Sweden has been detained since October on suspicion of facilitating his wife’s involvement in a sex trade with over 120 men. The suspect, reportedly from Ångermanland province, is being investigated for aggravated procurement, with many men allegedly linked to the case in Västernorrland and other areas.
The woman reported the situation to authorities, leading to the preparation of criminal charges related to aggravated procurement. Both the man, in his 60s, and his wife remain unnamed. While the man denies any misconduct, prosecutor Ida Annerstedt stated that authorities believe he exploited his wife extensively.
Details of the case revealed that the alleged sex trade operation spanned more than three years, comprising physical encounters and online interactions. The exact number of involved men became public recently. The trial, scheduled to commence shortly after the man’s indictment on March 13, may shed more light on the case.
Although it’s unclear if coercion or drugging played a role, Swedish law deems purchasing and facilitating sex as criminal acts. Notably, selling sex by sex workers is not illegal, as they are recognized as victims of exploitation. If found guilty of aggravated procurement, the man could face imprisonment ranging from two to ten years.
Prosecutor Annerstedt mentioned that two men have already been charged for paying to engage in sexual activities with the woman, and more suspects are anticipated to be prosecuted. Convicted individuals could potentially face up to a year in prison.
