Two teaching assistants have been dismissed following accusations of misconduct at Elgin Elementary School. Elizabeth Kay Sutton, 38, allegedly grabbed a 10-year-old student, pushed him back into his chair, and struck him in the face. CCTV footage captured the incident where Sutton appeared to move her arm towards the boy’s face, causing him to turn away. The student’s teacher noticed a red mark on his face after lunch. Sutton claimed the child had been challenging since returning from break and stated she used a technique she learned as a paraprofessional, unintentionally causing harm. Despite pleading not guilty, Sutton was arrested and subsequently terminated from her position.
In a separate incident, Otoria McClung, 37, was arrested for reportedly carrying a 5-year-old boy in a chokehold down a hallway, with witnesses observing the child in distress. Superintendent Nate Meraz emphasized the school’s commitment to student safety, mentioning that thorough background checks are conducted before hiring staff. Both Sutton and McClung are set to appear in court on May 20. The school administration highlighted the importance of accountability and ensuring a safe learning environment for all students.
