“Teen in South Africa Cleans Neglected Graves to Fund Education”

Date:

A teenager in Free State, South Africa, has taken on a unique venture to support her education by cleaning neglected graves. Sulandri Kotzé, 17, aspires to be a nurse and decided to create a business out of restoring forgotten graves instead of relying on her parents for financial assistance.

This endeavor has evolved into a family operation, with Sulandri’s parents joining in the work. Despite the solemn setting, they find moments of humor amidst the task, sharing jokes while tending to the graves.

The idea first came to Sulandri two years ago when she pondered her future post-schooling. Observing the deterioration of many cemeteries, she felt compelled to restore these final resting places with dignity. With the support of her parents, who advertised the service on social media, Sulandri quickly secured multiple jobs.

Currently, she maintains approximately 75 graves, meticulously cleaning each twice a month. Pricing varies based on factors such as grave size, condition, and client preferences for additional materials like gravel or cement. Sulandri also provides families with regular updates in the form of photos or videos showcasing the cleaned graves.

The service has garnered positive feedback, with clients expressing gratitude for the care shown to their loved ones’ resting places. Many customers reside far from the cemetery, making regular visits unfeasible, turning the task into a challenging search at times.

Beyond financing her nursing aspirations, Sulandri’s venture has deepened her connection to her family history. During their work, her mother stumbled upon the graves of her great-grandparents, sparking a newfound sense of familial responsibility.

The business continues to expand steadily, with each family member contributing in various roles. While the work is demanding, Sulandri finds fulfillment in providing solace to grieving families and ensuring the upkeep of cherished graves.
