Teen Rescues Injured Shark in Remarkable Act

Date:

Fifteen-year-old Finn Holland, a passionate animal lover, sprang into action when he discovered a shark stranded on the shore near his residence in Maces Bay, a coastal community in southern New Brunswick. Accompanied by his family, Finn drove their off-road vehicle to the beach where the injured shark lay. Despite initial concerns about the shark’s condition, Finn noticed slight movements and decided to help.

With caution due to its size and weight – approximately two meters long and 70 kilograms – Finn identified the shark as a porbeagle species. He managed to carefully guide the shark back into the ocean by its tail, witnessing it swim away to safety. Finn described the experience as awe-inspiring and was hesitant to touch the creature at first.

Jill Holland, Finn’s mother, expressed pride in her son’s spontaneous act of kindness towards the shark, highlighting his natural inclination to help without hesitation. The Hollands, who have resided in the area for over a decade, were surprised by the rare presence of sharks in the region.

According to Neil Hammerschlag, a renowned shark expert, encounters with porbeagles in such natural settings are infrequent. He emphasized the uniqueness of the sighting, especially since these sharks typically inhabit deeper waters. Hammerschlag speculated that the shark might have been distressed or affected by fishing gear, given its unusual proximity to the shore.

Porbeagle sharks possess a special ability to regulate their body temperature, allowing them to navigate cooler waters like those in Atlantic Canada and New England. However, their population has dwindled over the years due to overfishing, making encounters like Finn’s intervention increasingly rare.

Despite the species being declared endangered in the Atlantic Ocean by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada in 2004, the federal government has yet to take official action. Hammerschlag commended Finn’s bravery in returning the shark to its habitat, emphasizing the significance of such acts.

Reflecting on the overwhelming community support following his shark rescue, Finn acknowledged the intrinsic satisfaction of helping animals without expecting direct gratitude. He expressed a sense of fulfillment in knowing that he had made the right choice.
