A young individual suffered severe injuries after being intentionally set on fire, reportedly as a result of an ongoing dispute between two families in a small town. Jacob Thompson, aged 19, sustained burns covering 32% of his body, with third-degree burns on his face, torso, arms, back, and legs following the incident on Cowper Street in Coonabarabran, New South Wales, Australia, on October 13.
Allegedly, a group of individuals approached Jacob and doused him with a liquid that ignited, leading to his critical condition. Prompt intervention from passers-by prevented further harm, and Jacob was swiftly taken to intensive care for treatment.
Authorities suggest that the shocking attack was linked to a feud between local families in the rural Australian community. The police reported that Aaron Valette, 19, warned Jacob of the impending assault and proceeded to set him on fire using a plastic bottle filled with an unidentified liquid. Jacob’s family has since left Coonabarabran out of safety concerns and remains by his side at Concord Hospital in Sydney, where he was airlifted for advanced medical care.
Despite the severity of his injuries, Jacob’s loved ones remain hopeful as he continues to show signs of improvement. He is undergoing treatment for breathing difficulties, eye injuries, and a dislocated shoulder, requiring ongoing monitoring and care.
Jacob’s family conveyed his positive attitude towards his recovery, despite the emotional trauma he has endured. The incident has left lasting physical and emotional scars, necessitating extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and a safe environment for his recovery.
Following the assault, police arrested Valette, along with Mavis Chatfield, 45, and a 17-year-old girl at a nearby location. Valette faces charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and affray, while Chatfield has been charged with affray. Both individuals were denied bail, while the teenage girl was released pending further investigation.
