Half of teenagers aged 13 to 17 are uncertain about their political preferences and voting intentions in the upcoming general election. This uncertainty coincides with the Labour government’s proposal to lower the voting age to 16 by 2029. A recent survey by the Children’s Commissioner reveals that 90% of young people are anxious about their future prospects, particularly concerning securing employment and financial stability.
Dame Rachel de Souza presented the Big Future report today at the Commissioner’s Festival of Childhood in Manchester’s Science and Industry Museum. The survey indicated that 28% of children surveyed are unsure about which party to support, while 20% are undecided on whether to vote. Additionally, 11% stated they would not participate in the next election, with another 11% leaning towards voting for the Labour Party.
In terms of party preferences among young voters, Reform ranks as the second most favored party at 9%, followed by the Green Party at 8%. The survey highlighted that the majority of respondents are worried about various future uncertainties, encompassing housing, financial stability, academic success, and global issues like war and conflict.
Dame Rachel de Souza emphasized the significance of engaging with young voters, noting the pivotal role they will play in shaping the country’s future through their voting decisions. She stressed the importance of listening to children’s perspectives and involving them in discussions and decisions that impact their lives. The Commissioner called upon both local and national politicians to actively engage with children in educational and community settings to ensure their voices are heard and considered in the democratic process.
