A young adult generously offered his organs to save three individuals after experiencing a severe epileptic seizure. Patrick Leonard, 18, decided to donate his organs following an inspiring talk by his school’s Head of Sixth Form about organ donation. Tragically, Patrick suffered a catastrophic seizure on August 26, leading to his brain death. His organs were successfully transplanted, saving the lives of three people in need.
Patrick’s family, particularly his father Christopher, expressed immense pride in Patrick’s selfless decision to become an organ donor. They found comfort in knowing that Patrick’s wish to help others was fulfilled. The family received a heartfelt letter from a recipient expressing gratitude for the life-changing gift.
In 2023, Patrick was inspired to become a donor after hearing about a similar act of kindness by his school’s Head of Sixth Form. Despite facing challenges due to his epilepsy diagnosis, Patrick continued to show resilience and positivity. Unfortunately, his condition led to his untimely passing in August 2025.
Patrick’s family, including his mother Hermione and sister Darcy, found solace in his compassionate nature. They shared that raising awareness about organ donation through Patrick’s story raised funds for the Anthony Nolan Trust. Patrick’s passing shed light on the risks associated with epilepsy, including the potential for SUDEP, a sudden and unexpected fatality related to the condition.
The introduction of Max and Keira’s Law in May 2020 marked a significant milestone in organ donation legislation, promoting a default opt-in approach to organ donation. The law aims to increase the availability of organs for those in need of transplants, offering hope to countless individuals awaiting life-saving procedures.
