Corentin Moutet expressed anger following public remarks made by Danielle Collins regarding his alleged unsuccessful attempts at flirting. Collins, serving as a commentator at the Miami Open due to being sidelined with an injury, diverted her focus to a different topic during the weekend.
The 32-year-old American, usually a tennis player but currently on the sidelines, engaged in punditry work for the Tennis Channel at the Miami tournament. Her commentary on Sunday brought attention to French player Moutet.
Moutet, ranked No.33 in the world, defeated Tomas Machac on Saturday, but it was the pre-match incident that caught Collins’ interest. She openly discussed the situation in a segment on the Tennis Channel.
During the discussion initiated by presenter Steve Weissman, Collins recounted the interaction: “He was practicing before his match, shouting phrases like ‘give me a come on, give me a let’s go’ at me. In response, I jokingly told him that if he intended to flirt, he needed to improve his serve. Some speculate it’s about height or personality, but in reality, it’s about powerful shots and serves.”
When asked if she required a certain standard to be flirted with, Collins humorously responded: “In this context, maybe. However, it was amusing because he unfollowed me after a viral comment I made about not being interested in shorter individuals.
“I stand at 5’10, so it’s a personal preference. It’s not about belittling anyone shorter. He was displeased by that and messaged me before unfollowing me. He later messaged me again praising his performance in the match with big serves.”
Regarding the impact of his match performance on her opinion, Collins remarked: “I don’t believe he’s made a significant impression yet. He would need to bring a lot more to the table for that to change, but who knows what the future holds.”
Moutet, who stands at 5’11, was slated to face world No.1 Jannik Sinner, despite the controversy. Nevertheless, he took to social media to express his frustration with Collins’ narrative on Sunday.
In a tweet, he refuted Collins’ claims, stating: “I never followed you, so how could I unfollow you? @TennisChannel, why permit false statements like this on television? You initiated contact for mixed doubles, and I never followed you.”
He further added, “It seems you’re resorting to sensationalism for attention. Learn to value yourself so you don’t resort to such antics to garner interest from others.”
