Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to a lingering right knee injury sustained after his Wimbledon victory. Sinner, who recently defeated Alexander Zverev for his second consecutive Wimbledon title, decided to skip the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments, which typically precede the U.S. Open, in order to focus on his recovery.
In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete in the U.S. Open, acknowledging that despite intensive efforts with his team and medical staff, his knee issue requires more time to heal. Sinner, who is known for his exceptional performance at Grand Slam events, highlighted his fondness for the New York atmosphere and the support of the fans.
Carlos Alcaraz, who has been recovering from a right wrist injury since April, confirmed his participation in the U.S. Open via social media. The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a prominent feature in men’s tennis, culminating in their recent encounters in Grand Slam finals, with Alcaraz emerging victorious in the last competition held in New York.
Sinner, who has had a remarkable season with six titles and a record of 44-3, faced a setback at the French Open earlier this year. Despite his early exit in Paris, he made a triumphant comeback at Wimbledon, securing his fifth Grand Slam title. This will be the first time Sinner will miss a Grand Slam tournament since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019.
