An individual from Austria is facing terrorism charges for allegedly planning an attack on a Taylor Swift concert. The 21-year-old suspect, identified as Beran A by Austrian media, is accused of plotting to target one of the pop star’s concerts in Vienna in August 2024. Alongside two other individuals, all teenagers at the time, Beran A was arrested in connection with the alleged scheme.
The Vienna prosecutor’s office disclosed that the suspect is charged with belonging to a terrorist group, manufacturing explosives, and attempting to illicitly procure weapons. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors in Vienna claim that the suspect was associated with the Islamic State group and spread propaganda materials and videos through various messaging platforms.
Allegations state that the suspect acquired instructions online to create a shrapnel bomb using triacetone triperoxide explosive and produced a small quantity of the substance. The bomb type was described as typical of IS attacks, and the suspect is believed to have sought guidance from IS members on executing a bomb assault. Legal proceedings against the suspect are planned to take place in Wiener Neustadt, a town near Vienna.
Following a tip-off from the CIA before the event, the suspect was apprehended, resulting in the cancellation of three sold-out concerts of the Eras Tour at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, with an expected audience of 195,000 fans. In a separate incident last year, a 16-year-old boy named Mohamed A received an 18-month suspended sentence from a German court for his involvement in the attack.
In response to the cancellation of her Vienna shows, Taylor Swift expressed her dismay on Instagram two years ago, describing the situation as “devastating.” She expressed a mix of fear and gratitude, acknowledging the authorities for averting a potential tragedy and emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety over entertainment.
