The quintessential British experience often includes a visit to a pub, whether it’s a popular chain or a cozy local spot with traditional charm. One such enduring establishment is The Puffin, located on Osea Island off the coast of Essex. This unique pub opens only on Friday nights, without any official closing time.
Osea Island, isolated from the mainland for most of the day, boasts minimal amenities and a small population. Despite its remoteness, The Puffin stands as a vital social hub for locals and visitors alike.
Housed in a historic 300-year-old building in the island’s main village, The Puffin exudes character with its authentic low ceilings and a captivating Inglenook fireplace. The interior is adorned with charming decor, including dog portraits, island photographs, and vintage posters, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
While the low ceilings may pose a challenge for taller patrons, the cozy setting accommodates around 30 people comfortably, adding to its intimate appeal. The bar, bustling with activity, offers an impressive array of beverages, from local gins to a selection of beers, both on tap and bottled.
During my visit, I savored a spiced rum and coke, while others enjoyed beers, local spirits, and soft drinks, reflecting the pub’s diverse drink options. Complementing the drinks, complimentary bowls of peanuts and crisps were available throughout the visit, enhancing the overall experience.
Calvin, the pub’s proprietor, shared intriguing tales of the island and its notable visitors, including celebrities like Jude Law and Stormzy. The pub’s irregular opening schedule, primarily on Fridays and some bank holidays, adds to its allure, operating until the last customer leaves.
The Puffin’s ambiance, characterized by lively conversations, laughter, and a touch of nostalgia, creates a welcoming environment for patrons. With its old-world charm and cozy fireplace, it promises a memorable experience for anyone seeking a taste of traditional British pub culture.
