An urgent recall notice has been issued for over eight million Thermos-branded travel mugs due to safety concerns that resulted in serious injuries, including blindness. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission alerted consumers about a dangerous fault in the travel mug’s lid stopper that could forcefully eject when opened, causing potential harm. The issue stems from certain models of containers lacking a pressure relief function, leading to pressure build-up inside the mug and the stopper being forcefully expelled when opened.
Incidents have been reported where consumers were injured by the ejecting stopper, with at least 27 cases documented by the manufacturer. Some individuals sustained cuts and impact injuries requiring medical attention, while three victims suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye. The affected product lines include the Stainless King food jars and Sportsman food and beverage bottles, totaling approximately 5.8 million jars and 2.3 million bottles. These items were sold in various major US retailers such as Walmart and Target, as well as online platforms like Amazon, between March 2008 and July 2024, typically priced around $30.
The specific models subject to the recall are the Stainless King Food Jars (16oz SK3000 and 24oz SK3020 produced before July 2023) and the Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles (40oz SK3010). The products were available in different colors and featured the Thermos logo on the side, with the serial or model number located on the container’s bottom. Consumers in possession of the affected Thermos products are advised to discontinue use immediately and contact Thermos for a free replacement. Depending on the model, users may need to dispose of the stopper with photographic evidence or return the product using a provided shipping label. The items were manufactured in China and Malaysia.
For further assistance or guidance, individuals with concerns are encouraged to reach out to Thermos directly through their website or customer support line.
