The father of the Duchess of Sussex has returned to the United States from the Philippines to undergo advanced prosthetic limb fitting to aid in his mobility. Thomas Markle, 81, underwent a three-hour life-saving operation in December after his left leg was amputated due to a blood clot that endangered his foot’s blood supply. Following the operation, he relocated to an undisclosed location in the US after previously living on the island of Cebu, far away from his daughter Meghan and Prince Harry.
Markle’s elder daughter, Samantha, confirmed his return to the US for ongoing medical treatment, emphasizing the availability of top-notch prosthetics and the support of friends and family. Despite the challenging circumstances, she described the experience as spiritually uplifting for her father.
Since suffering health issues prior to Meghan’s wedding in 2018, Markle has had no contact with his daughter, Prince Harry, or his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet. Despite this, Meghan reportedly reached out to her father after his recent surgery, sending a letter through embassy officials.
Markle’s son, Thomas Jnr, expressed concerns about the financial aspect of his father’s care, indicating that Meghan has not contributed financially to his medical expenses. Markle’s recent move back to the US marks a significant development following his previous residence in the Philippines, where he expressed gratitude for the care received during his health crisis.
Additionally, Markle shared that he has formed a close bond with a Filipino nurse, Rio Canedo, who supported him during his recovery and accompanied him to the airport upon his departure. He expressed plans to stay connected with Canedo through video calls and hopes for a future reunion. Markle also expressed his desire to reunite with Meghan before his health deteriorates further, outlining plans for further medical assistance to enhance his mobility.
