“Three Arrested for Espionage Linked to China”

Date:

Three individuals have been apprehended on suspicion of engaging in espionage activities with a foreign country. The Metropolitan Police disclosed that the suspects, aged 39, 43, and 68, were arrested today by counter-terrorism units in London and Wales following allegations of aiding a foreign intelligence agency, specifically related to China. The trio remains in police custody, and authorities have conducted searches at the locations of their arrests.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the arrests were made as part of a Counter Terrorism Policing operation focusing on suspected breaches of the National Security Act. The three men were taken into custody on suspicion of collaborating with a foreign intelligence service, in violation of the National Security Act of 2023, with the country under investigation being China.

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, emphasized that the arrests were part of a proactive investigation and reassured the public that there is no immediate or direct threat. She highlighted the increasing workload related to national security and the collaborative efforts with partners to safeguard the nation and disrupt illicit activities.

The police statement further detailed that the arrests were carried out in London, Powys, and Pontyclun, with searches also conducted at additional addresses in London, East Kilbride, and Cardiff. The coordinated operation involved support from CTP Wales and CTP Scotland, with ongoing inquiries continuing.

In a parliamentary update, security minister Dan Jarvis warned of severe consequences if China is found to have interfered with UK sovereign affairs, stressing that foreign interference targeting UK democracy is a serious concern. Jarvis affirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding democratic institutions and processes and holding accountable any parties involved in such activities.

The minister underscored the importance of the National Security Act in providing the necessary legal framework for intelligence agencies and law enforcement to counter state threats effectively. He commended the swift actions taken by counter-terrorism police as a testament to the efficacy of the legislation in addressing security challenges.
