Jannik Sinner, the current top-ranked men’s tennis player globally, has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury. Since clinching his second consecutive Wimbledon title last month, Sinner has not participated in any matches and also withdrew from the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. The 24-year-old Sinner, who has secured five Grand Slam championships, only needs to win the French Open to achieve a career Grand Slam.
In a statement provided by tournament officials, the Italian player expressed his regret at having to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, citing ongoing issues with his right knee despite efforts by his medical team. Sinner mentioned his eagerness to return next year and his current focus on preparing for the upcoming U.S. Open.
Following in the footsteps of Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz also announced his withdrawal from the Cincinnati hard-court event due to a persistent wrist injury earlier in the week. Consequently, fans attending the men’s singles matches in Cincinnati will miss out on watching the world’s top two players in action.
Two years ago, Sinner claimed victory at the Cincinnati Open, a crucial stop ahead of the U.S. Open, where he also emerged victorious. However, last year saw Alcaraz defeating Sinner in the U.S. Open final with a four-set win. The 23-year-old Spaniard is gearing up to defend his title as the main draw of the tournament kicks off on August 30.
