“Top Snooker Players Push for Revised ‘Miss’ Rule”

Date:

Several prominent snooker players, such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have shared their perspectives on a rule they believe should be revised in the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, these top players were asked about the one rule change they would like to see implemented in snooker, and a common theme emerged.

Seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, alongside other players, has advocated for a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has been a point of contention among elite players. The current rule dictates that if a player fails to make contact with the designated ball during a shot and the attempt is deemed inadequate, the referee can call a foul and a miss.

A ‘miss’ is typically called when the referee perceives that a player intentionally chose a more difficult shot instead of taking an easier option to escape a snooker. It can also be invoked if a player underhits a shot, signaling a lack of effort.

Upon the announcement of a ‘foul and a miss’, the opponent of the offending player can decide to either reset the balls for a retake or leave the table as is. If the referee continues to call ‘foul and a miss’, the player may face repeating the same shot indefinitely while their opponent accumulates points without needing to play.

Conversely, the ‘three-miss rule’ stipulates that a player who fails to hit the correct ball three times consecutively automatically concedes the frame to their opponent. This rule has sparked debate within the snooker community, with critics arguing that its enforcement can be inconsistent, prolong games, and confuse casual viewers.

When asked about potential changes to the game, O’Sullivan promptly singled out the ‘miss rule’, advocating for a limit of three misses. Wilson echoed this sentiment, proposing a cap on misses to enhance gameplay.

Selby also weighed in on the issue, suggesting a restriction where players are allowed only three misses before consequences kick in, highlighting the potential impact of excessive misses on match outcomes.

Former world champion Murphy took a slightly different stance, criticizing the manipulative potential of the miss rule, particularly in enabling deliberate fouls, a tactic he disapproves of.

Adding to the discourse, current world number three Neil Robertson proposed a reform that would award a free ball to the opponent if a player fails to make contact with a directly visible red ball, aiming to expedite gameplay significantly.

Apart from the miss rule adjustments, snooker’s elite players also scrutinized the traditional dress code of the sport. The mandatory attire of long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear has faced scrutiny, with many advocating for more relaxed clothing requirements to align with modern sensibilities.

In response to the same question posed to his peers, Mark Allen emphasized the need to relax the dress code. Similarly, Luca Brecel highlighted the dress code, shot clock, and the obligation to hit a cushion as key areas deserving attention for potential modifications.
