“Tourism Overload: English Village Suffers Housing Crisis”

Date:

Residents of an exquisite village in England have been forced out by an influx of holidaymakers, completely dominating the area. Blakeney, located in North Norfolk, experiences a surge in visitors during the summer season, attracted by its charming stone houses, top-rated hotel, and abundant seal colonies in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In stark contrast, the winter season paints a different scene with a significant drop in visitor numbers and many traditional fishing properties left vacant. The village’s allure was evident during a late November visit, with the River Glaven meandering through the National Nature Reserve near the renowned Manor Coastal Hotel and Inn.

Blakeney Point is renowned for its seal populations, with guided tours offered year-round by Beans Boat. Over the years, the estuary has filled with silt, restricting access to the harbor to only the smallest boats due to the decline in the fishing industry.

Once a fishing village, Blakeney has transformed into a popular holiday destination, bustling with activity during the summer months. Local resident Tore, who returned to the village a decade ago, highlights the challenges faced by those seeking permanent residence in the area.

The Blakeney Neighbourhood Housing Society, established in 1946, aims to provide affordable housing for the local community amid soaring property prices driven by second home investments. Tore’s experience reflects the significant impact of securing affordable housing through the Society, allowing her to remain close to family and friends in the picturesque village.

With property prices in Blakeney averaging £714,000, well above the national average, and a median weekly wage of £571 in North Norfolk, the housing affordability gap is a pressing issue. To address this disparity, the district council introduced a 100% levy on Council Tax for second home owners, leaseholders, or tenants, aiming to curb the influx of non-resident property owners.

While tourism plays a vital role in the village’s economy, the prevalence of second and holiday homes poses a challenge for local residents struggling to afford housing. The Parish Council chairman acknowledges the impact of high property prices on the community, particularly during the winter months when many properties remain unoccupied, casting a shadow over the village’s charm.
