Tourists Evacuated as Wildfires Threaten European Vacation Spots

Date:

Tourists have been compelled to evacuate their lodging due to an intense wildfire threatening a popular vacation destination. Hundreds of firefighters are currently combatting wildfires in Portugal, Greece, and Spain amidst extreme weather conditions, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in recent weeks across the continent.

Dramatic images depict thick smoke engulfing the area behind a swimming pool in Grazalema, Cádiz, prompting evacuations of Hotel Fuerte and nearby residences. Footage from the region shows fire crews engaged in a battle against flames in El Alamillo, within the Sierra de Grazalema mountain range, with helicopters and planes deployed to aid in the fire suppression efforts.

Earlier this year, a similar evacuation took place in Grazalema due to landslide risks from unprecedented rainfall caused by Storm Leonardo. Now, nearly 200 individuals have been instructed to vacate their properties due to forest fires in the natural park, a popular destination for tourists engaging in outdoor activities and hiking.

The Andalusian Forest Fire Prevention and Extinguishing Service has been diligently working to contain the blaze affecting a 200-hectare area, successfully bringing it under control this morning. Regional minister Antonio Sanz stated that the situation has improved, with no active flames currently, but areas of smoldering still present. The ongoing challenge involves precise actions akin to “microsurgery,” utilizing aircraft to target residual heat areas, while remaining vigilant against potential rekindling of the fires.

The fire encompassed ecologically significant terrain, including an oak forest, and investigations are underway to determine its cause. Firefighting crews will continue their presence in the area until the fire is completely subdued and extinguished. A communication from the Andalusian Forest Fire Prevention and Extinguishing Service emphasized the operational status in the El Alamillo area of Grazalema.

Meanwhile, in Greece, residents of Thessaloniki were advised to stay indoors and seal windows due to toxic smoke from a burning recycling plant engulfed by a wildfire. Another significant wildfire erupted west of Athens on Sunday afternoon, with extensive firefighting efforts deployed to combat the blaze in the Mandra region. In Spain, a wildfire in the Girona region that began on Friday and scorched nearly 2,200 hectares was finally brought under control on Sunday.
