A tragic accident on the A1 in Northumberland has resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left three others with severe injuries. Northumbria Police received a report of a two-vehicle collision at the junction for Wandylaw, north of Alnwick, just before 4am on a Saturday.
According to reports, a silver Nissan Juke traveling southbound collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa heading in the opposite direction for reasons that are still under investigation. Emergency services responded to the scene where both drivers, a woman in her 50s from the Juke and a man in his 40s from the Corsa, were pronounced dead.
Two passengers from the Juke, a woman in her 20s and a school-aged boy, as well as a female passenger from the Corsa in her 20s, sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital. The families of all individuals involved have been notified and are receiving support from specialized officers.
Following the accident, a section of the A1 in both directions between Ellingham and Purdy Lodge was temporarily closed for approximately ten hours but has since reopened, as reported by Chronicle Live. The Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit is now seeking witnesses to the incident, particularly those with CCTV or dashcam footage leading up to the collision.
Sergeant Alex Partington from Northumbria Police expressed condolences to the affected families and emphasized the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the tragic collision.
